ISLAMABAD: Experts at Seminar on “Indus Water Treaty” urged for effective water policy to save water reservoirs and development in Agriculture Sectors.
The seminar was organised by the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan (SOPREST) an expert working group, here on Saturday. The SOPREST is the body that manages the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Expert Working Group meeting was chaired by SOPREST President Shamsul Mulk and was moderated by Shakil Durrani, executive director SOPREST. Distinguished professionals from disciplines of engineering and water management, economists, environmentalists, administrators, media and legal experts also addressed the seminar.
The group extensively discussed the issue highlighted by the recent statements of intent by India. The experts made suggestions and recommendations to counter the Indian narrative. They also highlighted the steps required on urgent basis to ensure appropriate utilisation of the abundant natural endowment of water resources.
They also particularly emphasised the need for developing additional water storages on rivers of Pakistan particularly on the Indus River. It was also highlighted that the country needs to improve the water efficiency in agriculture and to consider rationalising the use of water for agriculture.
The meeting also deliberated that the pollution of the waterways are required to be dealt with on an emergency basis. It was decided to convey the recommendations and the way forward to the Prime Minister of Pakistan and other relevant government agencies.
