KARACHI: Widow and son of slain Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) managing director Shahid Hamid have identified co-accused Minhaj Qazi during a court hearing on Saturday.
Family of the murdered managing director appeared before court today for the first time after it returned to country from abroad. Qazi was shifted to the court amid tight security while the judicial magistrate (south) asked lawyers and police to leave the courtroom before identification.
After identification process, the murderer told the court that police and Rangers had unjustifiably tortured him in custody, adding that he had asked the personnel to shoot him dead.
Umer Hamid and his mother also recorded statements before the court. Shehnaz stated that Saulat Mirza had opened fire on her late husband first followed by Qazi.
Shahid Hamid was murdered in Karachi’s Defense Housing Authority (DHA) on July 5, 1997. His driver Ashraf Brohi, and guard Khan Akbar were also killed in the attack.
It is pertinent to mention here that main accused in the case, Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) disenchanted worker, Saulat Mirza, was awarded death penalty and hanged in Machh Jail on May 12, 2015.
